A small pilot study has linked mitochondrial DNA variation in blood monocytes with vascular stenosis, glucose, insulin, cholesterol and inflammatory activity in people with obesity and metabolic syndrome. The findings point toward a more personalised understanding of cardiometabolic disease, but they are nowhere near ready to become a diagnostic test.
